Meh... I consider myself an advanced computer amatuer (don't ask on my choice of words), but I think I was infected by a virus. I've ran numerous virus scans (at least from 6 different programs), checked my startup list, reinstalled my drivers, did a system restore, switched monitors, checked my active programs, did a registry restore, and threw up a firewall and I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with my computer.
This all started with my stubborn mom 
She wanted me to open up an email for her from her "friend". Unfortunately it contained an attachment and was in French. Also, it talked about a virus from microsoft. I was like "oh crap" and closed out of it, then my mom wanted to read it again. She spent like 10 minutes reading it... After that, I resumed comp time and went to sleep. The next morning I woke up and I noticed that my screen saver wasn't on. Also, the screen wasn't as bright and I noticed distortions on it. It's kinda hard to explain, but whenever a dark shape or text comes up, it seems to stretch that text in the background of whatever window I have open (kinda like transparency). For example on my computer, the United TI banner is easily seen, but to the left and right of it are blocks of grey. They aren't just blocks of grey though; wherever you see the "United TI" text on there is lighter on the sides meaning that the darkness is actually coming from the darkness of the picture.
Anyway, I called Dell and did a whole bunch of stuff with my comp. I ran TrendMicro's online virus scan, I ran 2 other online scans (one being panda), I used HiJack this, I used Ad-Aware, I used Spybot-Search and Destroy, I currently have Zone Alarms's firewall, I use AVG, and I use Symantec's virus scan. Only one of these picked up any virus and they were in my system restore folder (which I deleted from my computer). Any of y'all know what happened to my computer? I'm desperate to find out.

I believe there may be a virus on your computer, or something has messed around with your display settings.
I'm not the resident computer expert, so I can only offer my opinion on such things. However, as a future reference, two things. If you're going to leave your computer for a while, perhaps you should turn off the monitor (or at least make sure the screensaver comes on). Number two, watch what you open. If it's something you think is bad, then delete. If it's from some one you know, and you think it's bad, perhaps you should e-mail the person to confirm it's actually from them.
And if your mom really wants to read something you think is bad, explain to her what can happen if it really is what you think it is. Hopefully she'll understand... |

The email says there's a new virus that permanently foobars your harddrive and autmatically send itself to your contacts in an email called "A card for you" and that you should forward this message to all those in your contact list to warn them and that you shouldn't accept any messages from pit_bout_de_chou@hotmail.com. Looks like bullshit to me, unless it's been on CNN and caused panic throughout New York in a matter of hours like the email clames.
I'm taking you opened it in hotmail? Well, then it's simply impossible that it gave you a virus, unless you ran any attachments or anything like that, just reading the email itself won't hurt.
It sounds to me like you foobared your monitor, my monitor does the exact same thing and my dad brought it from his work since they where getting rid of it and it was often, very often even, turned on for long periods of time (days.) I would test the monitor on another comp, if you get the same thing there you'll know 100% for sure it's not a virus but your monitor. If your monitor has a "demagnatize" function it's always worth trying that.
Basically, what's wrong is that the electrons fired onto the back of your screen are being guided to their right place by electromagnets to the sides and the top and bottom of your monitor, they're attracted by those magnets but because they're going so fast their orbit is just changed a bit instead of going right for the magnets, so somehow those magnets became inaccurate or whatever controls them inside the monitor is messed up.
This is a reason to get a new monitor (I don't think it's reasonable to fix it, if possible at all) and set up window's power saving feature to turn of the monitor after a couple of minutes of not using the comp.

I thought that was it too, but I tried Degauss and it didn't help. If that was the wrong thing to do, I'm sorry but I also usd a completely different monitor and got the same effect. A monitor that I KNOW works because I'm currently using it upstairs. And actually I opened it in Yahoo. Don't they have like javascript within messages that opens attachments without your knowledge?
To Jeremiah, you don't know my mom. She's the most annoying person you'll EVER meet. If I didn't open that email for her, she would've sat right next to me and yelled at me until I did... Sigh... |

well, amateur technically just means you don't make money at it.
Is "ordi" short for "ordinateur"?

Um, the system locking up and then your HDD literally being destroyed (impossible k thnx) when you ctrl+alt+del out of there is pretty noticeable.
BTW, could you forward the email, with any attachments it has, to me?
Oh, and post the source code of the page you get when reading it.
You can also open the e/mail on the comp with the good monitor and notice that nothing happens.

Meh, I'm pretty sure I disabled it when I saw on google that it could be used to exploit IE, but I've been having problems with trying to use AIM express so I might've enabled it for a lil while and forgot.
I'll forward the e-mail, but I'm not so sure it contained a virus now. The thing is, that's the only thing that could've hit me. Everything else that I did that night was normal.

I have a slight suspicion that you'll notice it when this happens, or do you mean about the monitor trouble and not what the e-mail's virus is supposed to do? (then I'd agree)

Also, if it really was/had a virus, all the other people that got it before you would now have a screwed up monitor.

You can't check whether the email is not making the virus up. If it gave you a name for the virus or something you could search for it on google. |

What I said meant that I'm not so sure that I actually got my messed up screen from the email. Not that it left the message.

I highly doubt that playing one game of starcraft would screw up my screen and an email in french from someone only my mom knows wouldn't. In any case, Starcraft is the only thing on my computer that doesn't seem affected by the distortion. Even when I boot up Windows, the Windows logo is shaded on the side.
My VGA connector is attached to the monitor too...

Software can. If you don't believe me I have a prank program that makes your screen all shaded (kinda like what I have times 100) from RJL software. It's only 111kb too.

When I got back on the next morning is when I noticed the difference. Also, some viruses go through your address book and forward themselves to everyone in it. Just because they forwarded it around, doesn't mean the WANTED to.
ALSO: My mom's friend knows that my mom can't speak French, so why would she send it on purpose?

u just proved it, its probably the graphics carp if the windows logo is also shaded, no virus i know of ever affected the loader screen, sure u dont have any magnets around ur computer? (it took me 5 days to realize it was a kinetic energy thingy that was messing up my tv)  |

Uhh... I don't know of anything that's even slightly similar to a magnet, especially anything new that's near here.
I got:
My tower, a cd holder, a floppy disk, a cable modem, a non-cordless phone, a cd burner, and speakers. Unless I'm magnetic?
Okay: just thought of something. If my other monitor is affected too and it IS magnetization, then that must mean that there's something around my computer causing a disturbance. Therefore moving my computer will help the problem. Anyone know how long it'll take for me to see a change after I move it? I tried moving it for a min, but I sensed no change; does it take a while?

You can't check whether the email is not making the virus up. If it gave you a name for the virus or something you could search for it on google.

Well I never claimed to have went to MIT or anything... but this amuses me. Okay, I looked up the Degauss function that I tried and it said it removed "internal permanent magnetization" (which I copy+pasted). Since I used a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MONITOR and got the same effect, then went upstairs and used it and had a perfectly clear screen, am I incorrect in assuming that it's an external force? Or is it that my monitor is only internally affected when I'm downstairs? That would seem kinda weird eh?
So anyway, I'm fixin to go SCOOBA dive, or is it SCUBA? Obviously it doesn't matter, because I'm sure I can find some source on the internet that says they're the same.
