Microsoft is right, 512MB is (more than) enough, but if you want to keep from having to buy the additional 256MB later, get it now. Simple enough, no?

microsoft once said 640K should be enough for everyone...

Yes, and if you're wrong once you can never be right again.

640K < 512 MB

maybe you misread "K" as "MB"

Microsoft is NOW right in saying 512MB is enough, back then they were terribly wrong in saying 640K is enough.

But that appears to be an urban myth...

the 640k comment isnt an urban myth, mr gates himself said that during the launch for ms-dos (i think, though i could be wrong)

It's a myth.

Quote:
"640k of memory should be enough for anybody"

But of course everyone knows that is a misquote. In an interview Bill corrected himself:

"I've said some stupid things and some wrong things, but not that. No one involved in computers would ever say that a certain amount of memory is enough [...] But even 32 bits of address space won't prove adequate as time goes on [...] Meanwhile, I keep bumping into that silly quotation attributed to me that says 640K of memory is enough."

There is no proof whatsoever that mr gates ever said anything like this.

Hey I have a question: I'm going to buy a new processor, and I need to know whether the P4 HT or the AMD 64 with Hypertransfer will be better for editing video and audio, because I burn DVD's a lot. And if there is a difference between the two, how significant is it?

Depends on clock speeds.

Well, I know it's between the P4 HT 2.8 GHz and the Athlon 64 2.8GHz, so I'm guessing the clock speeds are the same.

Pentium's are generally faster when it comes to video encoding, however, from what I've read, I'd say with tasks that infolve a lot of memory transfer the AMD CPUs with hypertransfer will beat the (far overrated) HT technology of Intel so at similar clockrates the P4 HT won't keep up.

Also, less heat and power and AMD CPUs generally being more efficient performance/clockrate wise makes the AMD a winner.

EDIT: +64bit = more joy

/AFAIK

Thanks!

I saw a page similar to what you posted but I can't seem to find it right now, but when I do I'll post it here!

i thought 32 was the way too go but amd 64 bit has this fast transfor technology 800mhz bus. Will that make an increadible impact on fps if i had 800 bus comperied to a standerd 400 bus?

Depends on the rest of the hardware, with a shared memory "videocard" you'll definately notice a huge boost, with a GF6800 this might not matter so much in games.
