Thinking of "case modding" my scooter, PC, and calc has made me wonder what kind of material, methods, and tools one should use to make one's own, custom shaped, PC or calc case/scooter cover/or anything like that.

Ie. how to make one's own custom shaped plastic covers for stuff.

Any thoughts?

I would like to do the same thing too. I'm preety sure there's companies out there that if you give them a design they'll ship you the finished product. Although, it may be very expensive because you would have to make a mold for it, etc. But, in Popular Science Magazine there's an ad for molding wood, metal, and plastic for $6000 you get all of the equipment you need.

Hehe, I think $6000 is a little much for a calc mod. : )

well I could only think of a cheap...yet effective way...make your design in a block of wood...Melt the color of plastic you want and pour into your mold...Than let harden and your done. Of course you would have to keep it smooth on top and keep your mold smooth... Very Happy I suppose I could come up with a design and make it in wood.

Well, the plastic and wood would bond together, and that's not a good thing.

You can put like oil on the wood or something like that to prevent that.

But where on earth would you get molten plastic?

this is simple, for ur calc, get some kiln clay, then press your old cover into it, then smooth it out and put your own desgin in it reversed, then bake it in a kiln, pour the melted plastic into it, and when it dries, break the clay and you'll be left with the cover

Okay... and we'd get a kiln and large amounts of molten plastic from where exactly?

How about non kiln clay? Just the air dry or oven bake stuff? The plastic part has bugged me before, you could use epoxy, but that gets a little spendy.

Epoxy is just too sticky, messy and ugly results to me used as a case mod. not to mention not that durable.

As far as I know, just melting the plastic and pouring it into a mold won't work, because you need higher pressure, to make sure the plastic becomes fluid. Without sufficient pressure the plastic would just evaperate and burn.

At some schools here they have Plastic Craft as a subject. They have made cellphone covers and everything. But I don't know how they've made them.

Ive done plastics before (as a subject) but i was only using perspex and such. But those were just sanded and shaped using heaters etc.

My ultimate goal is to case mod my scooter, wood wouldn't be a good choice.
