If you buy stuff online, do they make you pay a fee if you cancel an order after a month?

Oh yeah, which is better?

ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum edition

OR

Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra?

Depends on where you buy it.

I'd get the GF6800U, if you want X800 XT technology then you should wait a while till it's further developed and has a better cost/performance ratio.

Besides, anything above GF4 will easily run any games in the next 4 years.

It's for a SFF factor case with a micro atx mobo with athlon 64 processor and 1 gig of ram. It has 300 watts.

300 watts!? Ouch, you wont be able to use either of the cards you want, they need far more power, I believe 450 watts was a recommended minimum for the GF6800Ultra.

Let me look it up somewhere... aha, you need even more than 450 watts...

Quote:
•  GPU NVIDIA® GeForce 6800 Ultra
•  Bus Type AGP
•  Memory 256MB GDDR3
•  Core Clock 425 (vs. 400MHZ standard)
•  Memory Clock 1100MHz (effective)
•  RAMDAC Dual 400MHz
•  API Support Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0, OpenGL for Microsoft® Windows®
•  Connectors DVI, DVI, S-Video-Out
•  638 million vertices/sec setup
•  35.2GB/second memory bandwidth
•  Minimum 480W PSU

Luckily, PSUs aren't as expensive as videocards, I'd get a 550 watt or more PSU with two fans in it.

The X800 XT only needs at least 300 watts, but doesn't even have DirectX9 support.

With a CPU and RAM like that I wouldn't risk buying the X800 XT either since your PSU only just makes the minimum requirements, and the CPU eats a lot of power, I'd either get a new PSU and the GF6800 or I'd get a Radeon 9800.

Right off of ATI's official website:

"RADEON™ X800 graphics technology offers the latest DirectX® 9.0 and OpenGL® 2.0 shader support to ensure that current and upcoming games look and play brilliantly, especially in high-definition."

I was quoting the specs of the 6800 Ultra, not the X800.

I must've read an old article about the X800 technology and they probably fixed it, which is good because otherwise nobody would ever buy that card and ATI needs to keep from going bankrupt untill I got a laptop with the Radeon 9800 Mobility.

remember, I said it was a micro-ATX case with 300 watts. The power supply is meant for sff mobos and cases. Plus, I even heard of a sff box with 270 watts that can hold the geforce 6800. I think it was made by a company named monarch computers. It was in an issue of maximum pc.

I'm just wondering if my new pc could too.

Find out what amperage your PSU outputs, some lower wattages PSU still output enough amperage for the videocards.

I still wouldn't risk it.

Well, PSU's only cost about $70-$100 and the video card I'm guessing is a lot more than that so just buy another power supply.

I've also heard that you need 2 extra free cables from your PSU with nothing else plugged into them them.

I doubt it, the cards get their power from the mainboard through the AGP port they're plugged into.

Man, that's a real power waster video card there. Anyways shadowwing have you tried looking for the power supply on newegg.com yet?

Yeah 1000 posts!

It does not waste a lot of power, it uses a lot of power.

What could you possibly need 300 watts for on a video card anyway?!?

Not all of it, most modern cards need a 4-pin thingy from the PSU plugged into it to get all the power they need.

Videocards simply need a lot of power, why do you think gaming is such a battery drain on laptops?

I still doubt you'd need 2 of those, maybe it depends on the PSU and how much amperage it delivers for each of those 4-pins connectors?
