I think I phrased that wrong. What I meant to say was, I had gone to bootdisk.com, but the closest option I could find was this. (Found via XP Pro link at bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm)

The problem is I don't have an XP startup disc, so enabling my cd drive won't help me any. Might the above floppies have fdisk on them, or am I looking in the wrong section of the site?

Sorry for any confusion!

I'm pretty sure the Win98 boot disks had fdisk on them, if they don't you can download fdisk and put it on the boot disk.

Ok, so fdisk is universal? I discovered an unlabled windows ME fdisk, (or at least a floppy with fdisk and a few other applications). I was kind of worried about trying it though, cause I didn't want to replace part of XP with ME or something.

Thanks!

I haven't heard any NONONONONO DON'T TRY THATs yet, which I'm taking as a good sign, but I'm still worried about messing everything up beyond (professional) help. When I connect my bad hard drive and boot off the floppy disk, I get a "Windows Millenium Startup Menu" with I believe "Help, Boot with CD-ROM support, Boot without CD-ROM support, and Minimal Boot". The floppy disk I have has Command.exe, Ebdundo.exe, Extract.exe, Fdisk.exe, Findramd.exe, Hibinv.exe, and the .bat and .sys files they need.

I just want to make sure asking my Millenium Edition Fdisk to rewrite my MBR won't cause any problems with me running XP. Do any of you know?

Thanks for helping a newb!

Hmmm, guess I didn't need to worry. All I got was the message No Fixed disks present. I also tried running scandisk, and all it detected was the a drive. Scanreg didn't work either. Looks like I'm off in search of the recovery console in some form. Neutral

EDIT: Just to double check, a Windows Home Cd would work too? I'm hoping that portion is still the same. And if I manage to get one, might fixboot and/or fixmbr be what i'm looking for?
( * Fixboot writes a new startup sector on the system partition.
*Fixmbr repairs the startup partition's master boot code. The variable device is an optional name that specifies the device that requires a new Master Boot Record. Omit this variable when the target is the startup device.)

Thanks again!

Yo I'm back
My computer freaked out when we [I and Leofoxus] tried to format C.
But I got some advice from the shop where I bought it and they said that I should get a new HDD. I bought one [mucho expesivo!] and installed it and my computer is running again! woho!

Well I think I found my problem. One of my friends offered to check it out, and hooked it up to his computer. Turns out it was completely blank, not even partitioned! Neutral This makes me really wonder how I managed to fix it the first time.

I'll probably take this as an opportunity to install Linux as a dual boot and see if I can understand it, and finally switch to NTFS. By the way, I would really appreciate help refinding a web host I had bookmarked, it offered a decent amount of space (~50 MB and up) and support for just about any scripting language starting at 8 dollars A YEAR! I can't remember the name of it, I'm thinking along the lines of Sure Host or similar.

Thanks for everyone's help along the way!

Dude, they ripped you off... you can't destroy a HD by formatting it!

www.tengun.net is probably much better and only differs $4 in yearly costs.

That does look pretty nice.

By the way, I stumbled across a very active webhosting forum, if anyone is looking for a host check out http://www.freewebspace.net/forums. There's even a link in one guys signature for a free host that offers unlimited space and bandwidth, or $25 a year to remove the ads!

who cares, he didn't pay for the harddrive anyway. The shop did, because he still had warranty.

Last I checked they required you to "apply" by whining to someone in some IRC channel of theirs only to get the reply to go to some other free hosting site, which didn't exist anymore, but they now have some kind of application e-mail layout form so I guess it's worth another try.
