Unless a single layer of paint could replace 5inch armour plating it'll wear and get scratched and what not.

Well, yeah, but how many times do you need to put a fresh coat of paint on your car? Almost never.

How many times have you dropped your car from 5 to 10 times it's own height? How many times you have had your car in a backpack stuffed full of books and office equipment? How many times have you slid a tight plastic cover over your car?

How many times does your car have to go through nature's wrath? Now compare that to your calculator. Besides, who drops their calculator that often, and abuses it by shoving it into their backpack?

Just don't complain when there's scratched on your precious painted calc.

Uh-huh. Have you ever tried painting a handheld device before? How do you think they get the calc's store-bought color on? That paint's just as susceptible to damage as painting it would. Besides, you could just put silicone or some kind of thin protectant over the paint when it's dry.

Well, cutting the plastic reveals that the plastic itself is in fact the colour of the calc, it isn't painted on.

Hmmm... slight detail. Still, a protecting outer cover over the paint would work.

Yes, it would probably keep away those little scratches you get most of the time, being a little bit carefull will keep away the bigger scratches, though there's always accidents. But those are so infrequent you'll just fix it (greenstuff + repaint = joy) if it happens.

I like the idea of an actual metal plate better though, might be a cool idea for a laptop case mod too. I'm a bit worried about magnetic fields though, your data could get messed up pretty bad if the metal becomes magnetic. (yes, there's metals that can't, but they're not as easy to work with as regular iron, I think)

Isn't iron kinda hard to work with though? Anyways with it becoming magnetic; it probably won't happen unless you have the metal right over the hard drive and have the hard drive running non stop.

You might have some luck with an extruded aluminum casing. It's diamagnetic so there's no chance of it being magnetized. Of course, if you don't a have a metal shop at your home or school it may not be worth the expense. Then there's corrosion and the weight. Anyway, I like the idea of a quality paint; or maybe a metal lable--like a dogtag.
