In just about every programming tutorial (for any language), the first program you write always displays "Hello World!" on the screen. Does anyone have any idea where this phrase originated, and why it became so popular?

The idea for this topic was stirred by the Programming Club thread.

"Hello World?" Hmmm...I used to know this one... I think it had something to do with a famous magazine article or a movie or something.

[edit] Never mind. I was thinking of war dialing.

I do believe Dennis Ritchie & Brian Kernighan are to blame for that.. started with the book The C Programming Language somewhere in the 1970's I could be wrong though
