Does anyone know an easy way to backlight a TI-83 Plus unsilverized edition?
I've seen soo many different ways to do it on the net and was wondering if anyone actually did it and how...

Thanx All!

LED Sidelighting
This is a basic method that's also very effective. You can use several LED pairs and shine them into the screen from the corners. This will also scatter the light fairly well. I think this type is very promising because it's cheap, and you don't have to track down those rare EL sheets.

EL Backlighting
This kind is more impressive if you can pull it off without any damage. I'm nervous about trying this myself because it involves some "major surgery." If I remember right, you'll need to eventually slide the EL sheet between the LCD and its glass cover (under the plastic one). Also you have to do it without pulling out the "ribbon bus" that feeds into the LCD. My roommate *claims* he did this in high school, but I think he's full of it! Razz

To summarize, EL type is more impressive because it has that "factory-made" look. I don't know exactly how EL sheets work so that's about all I can say. But LEDs are alot less risky, plus you can choose what color to make the screen.

[edit]
Correction, you can choose the EL color too.

on the LED one, it doesn't tell anything about the power supply, or a switch to turn it on or off. Do you know how to do any of that?

Aren't you supposed to connect them to the calc's batteries?

Calc batteries should work. Maybe richfiles used plug-in jumpers for switching.

I know the leds don't need much juice to light up, wouldn't 6 volts be too much for the leds? Unless maybe u had one on each corner and side of the screen

If you put plexiglass behind the screen, you don't need 8 lights, because the light would spread through the glass. 2 or 4 would suffice.

And I think 6 volts would be too much for the LED's. But I would run them off a seperate battery source anyway. If you really want to use the 6v from the batteries though, it's not tough to throw in some resistors.

I'm thinking I might try this out. And if I break my calc in the process, just another excuse to get an 84+!

From my experience with LEDs they can easily take 6V. And you couild also connect it in such a way that it only get's 1.5V from one battery.

How realistic is it to buy a backlighted TI somewhere?

I've tried to backlight my TI83+. You can't do it with LED's; there's not enough room in there. Unless someone has a picture to prove me wrong and help me out here.

LEDs will work on whatever voltage you buy them to be able to take, but they don't do to well with high Amps, connecting them directly to a battery will decrease the lifetime greatly, so you should really put in resistors, if you don't want them to burn out.

Well, if I told you now then Kerm would try to steal my idea and use it in his CSA like he did with my RGB Screen. The little cheat...

All you figured out was how to get backlighting in there, you're not the first who figured that out. Right?

Who figured out how to get backlighting to fit inside of a TI 83+? And I'm not talking about the EL Panel thing. I mean all internal. Besides, I know that no one's tried my method before.

Everybody who has ever backlighted their calc has figured it out, including those who wrote tutorials on how to do it. How on earth would you do external backlighting? Doesn't it have to be inside the calc to be backlighting instead of just some LED near our calc so we can see a bit more of it in the dark?

I want to see anyone who has pictures and/or a tutorial on how they got a backlit TI 83+.

The LED's are at the top of the screen and are very close to it, and they are nearly all 5000mcd so they are very bright and they will light up the screen.

But that's not really backlighting in the literal sense of the word, right?

I mean that's the same thing as turning on the light in your room, only the lights are smaller and closer (hopefully Laughing) to the screen.

Well, it's not true backlighting, but lots of companies pass it off as such, and everyone just considers it as backlighting. Also you could just do it internally and have a true backlight.
