I think we should add a forum rule concerning topics about viruses and malicious code etc. I know there is already a policy about offensive topics, but perhaps people wouldn't necessarily associate computer security exploits with things like rape and violence. An explicit notice on the subject might be a good idea.

I can get the problem with cracks and stuff, but most hacking stuff can simply be turned around and given as "network security" info/questions.

I'm pretty sure that a question "how do you make a jpg exploit" is NOT a security question.

We should probably use this as a chance to update the forum rules. Specifically on the recent drug posts.

and ROM requests....we got those all the time, and they're illegal....The topic that sparked this one was more about embedding javascript in a gif..my question was legit I thought....if you are trying to do something like that how do you prevent the GIF reader from interpreting te code as picture data.....and as far as I know there aren't any picture editors that allow you to embed code directly into a file.

Well, we don't have to put not to trade ROMS. It is obvious it is illegal, so we never added it specifically to our rulls.

If someone tries to trade roms, we will simply stop the process.

As for the drug posts, let's stay away from these. I don't want to deal with them any more than AlienCC. A few weeks ago I got rid of a picture of a big bong in a signature.

Please let's refrain from using anything that is offensive in avatars and signatures and let's keep things at an appropriate level for programmers, parents, students, and teachers.

This is a family and education orianted non-profit website.

Thanks.

Additionally I have updated the forum rules slightly to correct a few minor spelling errors, and most notably to extend rule #7, it would be in the best interest of everyone to read the forum rules if you havenít already, and if you have its always a good idea to review them periodically anyway.

Thank you for your cooperation and compliance, especially to all those who have been helping moderate the forums to keep them a positive environment for the community.

Quote:
illegal substances

offensive

Alcohol (beer, wine, liquor, etc) is a drug.
Tabacco (sigarettes, pipes, sigars, etc) is a drug.
Cough sirup can be used as/is a drug.

None of those are illegal, even in the US, but which are offensive? Are any of them? Why would I think talking about wine would offend anyone? Would it? How do you (whoever answers this) know?

Also, illegal by which country's laws?

Where do we draw the line?

Obviously you don't need to tell me pornografy for example is considered offensive when it's defined in the rules along with some other examples, but rules are also ment to prevent things, not just record what has gone wrong in the past. Therefore I raise these questions.

My suggestions..

Illegal means illegal in any western country
Who cares if software containing cus words is illegal in Japan. If you lived in the US, would you care if it was illegal in the UK but not the US? Enough to make a rule against it? I highly doubt it, but this is my suggestion.

Offensive means anything listed as offensive in the rules, new offensiveness may be added to the list
Right now, the examples cover anything that'd only be posted to offend on purpose. (and some other things too imho Smile)

You being anybody who reads this. The quoting of the two words at the top of this page is also not aimed at anyone who actually said those words. They're just words that turn me to questioning some things so that we think about our rules further and maybe improve our rules further as well.

One last thing:
If something hasn't been defined as offensive but somebody talks about it, then don't hold it against her later. Not everybody shares your exact opinions on things. It would be unreasonable to expect otherwise. Just point out that it is offensive, or if you're a mod, just a close the topic/delete the post at hand. Don't talk bad about someone just because they tried to talk about something that offended you. (you can talk badly about their act of offending on purpose if you feel the need to) For all you know, something you love to talk about (like anime for example, a perfectly fine topic to most) may offend someone, so be understanding when that situation is turned around.

Be respectfull.

Discuss.

I really don't see anything wrong with limiting acceptable topics too much rather than too little. This is still primarily a programming forum. Just because we have an open topic forum for discussing, well, anything, doesn't mean that any topic is a good idea for posting.

Go away, if you want to talk about these topics. They even have a forum too I think. Not recommended for public computers, and https:// is usually a good thing. Since there are sites like this for certain topics, don't post them here. :)

Oh, and enclosing something in *cough* or size=-1 or "<don't do this>...</don't do this> is not acceptable either. If it's not going to be discussed, it's not going to be discussed, even "hidden."

But do we want to change Open Topic into another General Programming subforum? Also, I don't think I suggested limiting it too litte, then I would've disagreed with banning drugs topics. :)

I don't think "go somewhere else with everything that isn't programming" is an answer either. (unless Open Topic is removed) The point of Open Topic is having a place to discuss general subjects with the people of this specific forum. For example, we've had music topics, tv show topics, and more miscelaneous stuff. There are thousands of forums that focus on these points, yet I don't think anyone here minds them being on this TI communty's forum.

And yes even general subjects like music can be offensive. Plenty of people who take offense to Death Metal, Punk, Rap or whatever.

This brings me back to my point, if you ban every general subject that contains sub-subjects that may offend people then you'll ban everything. We're a programming forum, but specific websecurity topics may be applied to illegal practises. Let's ban the parts that are illegal, and not the entire subject. With drugs this would be banning topics discussing illegal practises involving drugs (ie illegal drugs and illegal applications of drugs) but allowing discussing drugs in general (ie discussing if drug x should be allowed for medicinal use or discussing if drugs turns people into criminals).

Which brings me back to my questions of what measure should be used. Legal by what system, and offensive according to whom?

And unless you want to write down every single offensive topic and subtopic that would be banned here, a better solution than mine would be needed. ie. defining what illegal (I suggest US law since that's where the server and most members are) or offensive (?) mean and simply banning discussions on illegal and offensive practises as a whole with some examples in the rule for good measure.

Because I don't see a good possible definition of offensive that wouldn't involve listing every single topic that is considered offensive by this forum.

I think we should define legal by whatever country the server is in, and if you are from a country with different laws don't participate in discussions that might be illegal in your country.
