Quote: TI Announces TI-84 Plus, SE; TI-89 Titanium
Posted by Michael on 7 January 2004, 22:25 GMT
TI has announced two new calculators for release in the spring: the TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. Both are fully compatible with the TI-83 Plus and TI-83 Plus Silver Edition. Both have new physical styles, an integrated USB port for computer connectivity, an internal clock, and an available kickstand.
The TI-84 Plus features 480 KB of flash memory, 24 KB of user RAM, and a 15 MHz clock speed, while the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition has 1.5 MB of flash memory, available interchangeable faceplates, and is also 15 MHz. If you haven't already guessed, the Silver Edition, like its 83+ counterpart, is silver in color.
For the summer of 2004, the high-end calculator line gets a metallic lift with the TI-89 Titanium. In addition to tripling the memory to 2.7 MB of flash, it also features a built-in USB port for computer connectivity as well as the kickstand slidecase (I'm not sure if this is included or an add-on, I think it's purchased seperately). All three calculators feature high-contrast LCDs and are compatible with TI's projection devices (like ViewScreen).

One word...*drool*
By the way do you have any idea how much one of those would cost? And do you know any differences (mainly in speed) between this and the 83+ (besides the ones you already listed)?
EDIT #2: I just realized the poll was asking if you were going to purchase one, not "have you heard of it." So I put "NEVER!" as a response. My correct response if I hadn't been too lazy to read the question would have been "Maybe."

i DONT CARE HOW MUCH IT COSTS!
this is a must have, particularily because of its COMPLETE COMPATIBILITY with the 83 series and it sounds like it will be faster too!
BIG DISSAPOINTMENTS- no color, and no real sound support
BIG YAY- sleek look, mo mem, faster, USB connectivity built in
QUESTIONS- will all program transfers be handled through this new link at the top?
Will there be a special version of TI-OS to acompany this product, and of course, although it doesn't matter much, PRICE!

"9x the memory of the TI-83 Plus for storing up to 94 Apps"
I'm sorry, this is just getting insane. What in the h#&& would you do with 94 Apps?!
(Oh yeah, and *drool* )

Hey in reality , the TI-84+ SE is almost like the TI-83+ SE except it has an USB port on the side. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. |

By "94 apps" they mean "94 flash pages". |

Certain flash apps take more than one page.
By the way, I voted no for buying one. I already have a TI-89 and HP 49g+. I think I'm set for a few years. |

Hey, I might get it, but it just seems like a TI-83+ SE with an USB. If only TI would add up to 2MB and a better processor, I would say it is a good counterpart. |

NEVER!
Ti83 still works fine, it's just slow.
Besides, by the time I need something better than what I currently have (next year) I'll have a top of the line laptop so why bother with some measily calc?
It does look nice though, but casemod + laptop > ti84.

what does the "improved display" mean? If this means there are more pixels, I definitely want that calculator. If it's just a better contrast level, I could live without it.
I could live without it anyway... but it would be hard forcing myself to. Why couldn't this have come out last year, when I could have got it for free????
In case no one noticed, there are exactly 94 "app spaces" available on the 83 SE as well.
There's a "TI-84+ Graphing Calculator for dummies" book out already! Here.
I. Want. That. Calculator. |

Umm, the clock function isn't all that great. I mean, it'd take you about two, maybe three second tops to glance at the wall clock or something? The only thing it'd really be useful for would be certain types of games or whatever. (Time based RPG. Sounds like fun. ) |

I agree. Hey who knows maybe someone will make a Pokemon Ruby type game? Oh yeah, who's gonna get it as soon as it comes out? |

Here's something to compare:
Old PC we consider useless junk:
66mhz
32mb ram
1mb Trident ISA video card
22mhz soundblaster 16 sound card
28.8 modem
15" monitor, max resolution 1024*768*32
calc everybody seems to like:
6 mhz
160+24kb ram
no videocard
no sound card
some kind of never working usb or parralel link
96*64 resolutoin monochrome plastic display
Good PC:
Pentium IV 3.2ghz @ 4ghz
4GB RAM
256 GF5900 video card
Soundblaster 7.1 sound card
10mb/sec broadband internet connectoin
21" flat screen monitor, max resolution 2048*1280*32 |

The TI-84+ loooks SOOOOO tight, and I want it SOOOOOOOOO bad. However I think that since I plan on retiring some time soon, It would be a waste of Alot of money, but hey, theres always a five finger discount! |

Time-based whatever. And it would be useful for delaying one second. It could be used in a lot of games BUT hard to port to 83(+ (SE))

I am torn apart between common sense, which says "You have a calculator already doing pretty much the same thing, why do you want another?!" and some other random part of my brain which says "I Want That Calculator!!!" |
