In 2020, after OS updates removed native programmability from the TI-84 Plus CE family, a user "YvanTT" released a jailbreak called ArTIfiCE to restore this previously officially supported feature. It quickly became a vital way to run shells, utilities, and games written in assembly or C, two languages that have traditionally been valuable ways for enterprising graphing calculator hobbyists to learn a more advanced STEM skill than the more primitive TI-BASIC on the calculators.
After five years, OS version 5.8.3 for the TI-84 Plus CE and OS 5.6.5 for the TI-82 Advanced Edition Python blocke ArTIfiCE; three months later, YvanTT released ArTIfiCE v2.0, again restoring native programmability. And following the pattern, OS 5.8.5.0047 for the TI-84 Plus CE once again blocked arTIfiCE in April of this year.
With the Back-to-School season now squarely behind us, YvanTT has released arTIfiCE v3 for TI-84 Plus CE OS 5.8.5, once again restoring native programmability in assembly and C, and once again making it possible to run the full library of community-created programs, utilities, and games for the TI-84 Plus CE from Cemetech and elsewhere. They also provided a well-written guide to installing arTIfiCE v3, including a handy FAQ ("Can I cheat with it?" "No. arTIfiCE only restores functionality TI calculators had for dozens of years and removed in recent OS versions. It is also not present in Press-To-Test (PTT) / exam mode, see below. arTIfiCE and arTIfi82 are in no way a cheating tool. Cheating is not condoned here in any way.").
