In September 2012, my first book, Programming the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus was published. This first book was (and is) an example-filled, hands-on tutorial that introduces students, teachers, and professional users to programming with the TI-83+ and TI-84+ graphing calculators. Once that project was completed and started hitting stores shelves, Manning Publications, my publisher, had another proposition for me. Since my writing and teaching style was well-received by readers, and many have decried the inadequacy of existing TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus books for beginners, they asked me to consider such a project.

I'm happy to announce that Using the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus will be published in September 2013 by Manning Publications. This new book will teach you calculator skills through the lens of fun exercises and problems. If you want to learn how to use your calculator while getting a more intuitive feel for your math/science class material, you can work through full chapters. In a hurry to finish homework and need to learn a calculator feature fast? Easy-to-find reference sidebars will give you skills in a nutshell. The first review cycle is underway, which means that members of the target audience are giving Manning feedback on the progress thus far. You can contact them if you want to become a reviewer. You can also become part of the MEAP (Manning Early Access Program) to receive new chapters as they're completed, plus get the printed book when it's complete.

I'll be announcing milestones along the way as I make progress on Using the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus, and as always, I more than welcome feedback and suggestions with you. With our growing body of student and teacher members, and the rising popularity of education tools like SourceCoder and the jsTIfied online calculator emulator, I look forward to working with and teaching calculator skills to the students and educators this new book is aimed at.

What does the little bar say, in the corner of this pic with a prizm on it?
That's not a Prizm, it's a TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition. Smile The text says "Full Coverage of the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition!".
I actually noticed this listed on the jsTIfied emulator page the other day and this intrigued me. Sadly it might not be as much useful to me since I was more into programming-oriented stuff but this will definitively be helpful for those who are new to their calc. Hopefully this book convinces people to get the other book as well and go further than using the calc for math Smile

Well with how blurry it is it looks like a Prizm. (Just sayin)
Otherwise, seems like a very cool book and I wish they had a book like that for the Prizm.

You make the especially important point that the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition looks a lot like the Casio Prizm, which I think is true. Yes, it would be nice if there was such a Prizm book; maybe Manning will tap me to write one. Smile

As if - I doubt they consider the Prizm to be ubiquitous enough to bother with. I mean, it doesn't look very popular to me...

Great news about the book, Kerm! We are certainly in approval of as many calculator books from you as possible, and in getting them widely accepted as the best in class, too!

It's the runner-up in the US, certainly, but we're far from the only country with math classes. Based on traffic to our Prizm archives, it seems that Portugal uses the Prizm quite heavily, for example.

I appreciate it; I hope a combination of my effort and feedback from the book's editors and reviewers makes it the best it can be.

Thanks on both counts! But it's not like the fact that I am working on a second book makes my first book any less useful of a programming resource. Smile

Just some silly idea I had a little bit ago, thought it'd amuse others as well. Smile

I'd love to hear your analysis as to why this book is a love story. Smile Although pretty much any analysis as to why it's a love story at all will most certainly prove your point.
Any person willing to buy this book to learn to program their calculator shows a love that cannot be broken.

Obviously.

You win at least two free internets from me for this one. I love it. Very Happy
Just got the eBook (PDF) following a email from Manning. Great work Kerm. I wish we had maths books like this when I was a bit younger. I am revisiting Calculus as a refresher plus some other stuff. The TI Manuals are a little heavy going...
Thanks!
I have two copies sitting at home in VT, waiting to be escorted down here, and apparently also a PDF version that I still have to download.
