I think I just see the gesture differently. It's not the ring keeping you faithful, it's that you're faithful and you're wearing a ring to show that being faithful is meaningful to you. A subtle difference, but it's still there.

Besides, I called it a "promise ring" partly because I couldn't think of anything else to call it. To me, it's less of a "promise ring" and more of a "I'm thinking of you" ring.

Ah, good, that sounds like more healthy of an attitude than what the rest of us were thinking. I like the idea of an "I'm thinking of you," and I feel that jewelry in general given to significant others that's worn often has that sort of a connotation.
