When i run ubuntu as a live cd how do i return to windows. I try going to shutdown all it does it lets me take out the disk and then all i see is just a black screen. When i googled how to do it the only things i could find where people who did not want to use linux any more and wanted to go back to windows.

Edit: I might also have another question later about how to connect to the internet using dial-up, because i am having trouble finding wvdial.

Edit2: I found wvdial now to try it out.
You didn't seriously just ask this, did you? You go to shutdown, when it tells you to take out the CD, take it out and then hit whatever key it tells you to "finish" shutting down. Then you just turn your computer back on Rolling Eyes
I wondered the same thing too. Ah well, what can you do.

Not all winmodems are supported. I bought an external modem and it works flawlessly in ubuntu (but makes vista blue screen, then instantly crash and restart. A modem working in linux, but not windows. Oh, the irony. Very Happy ).

It doesn't tell me a button to finish shutdown. And as far as the dial up thing goes I am still having trouble because I can't get wvdial to find my modem so i will read their faq and then go from there.

Edit: There may still be hope, since i have a pci modem the scanmodem utility has a slight chance of finding it then i just have to go back to the site where i found it and download the right driver. I have to hope it works to because i'm on a family comp and don't feel like installing another modem(plus my parents would be mad).

If it doesn't find it, just buy an external (a serial port one, NOT USB). You can unplug and hide it when your parents aren't around.
I will look into that if it cant be found. Can that kind of modem be picked up at wal-mart or someplace similar or would i have to order one.
hmm? Summer project maybe Ubuntu for me?
Well scanmodem detected and i sent the modem data to their discussion list, and i should be receiving an email soon on which driver i need to download.
Is there anyway i can install ubuntu from windows because it takes about an hour just to load the installer and then an hour for each additional step.
winbuntu
Is that what you used to install Ubuntu?
No. I have dial-up and that way involves a lot of downloading.

Oh, crap, you have dial-up too, don't you? Maybe you can do it at a friend's house?

...uh, what? The extra overhead of running Windows while installing will only slow things down - not speed them up. Although somehow I think you are exaggerating if you are saying that it takes the live CD 60 minutes to boot up. Very Happy

To make the install go faster, just don't do anything else while installing Ubuntu. Resist the urge to open up Firefox or something, and ONLY run the installer.
It only takes about five minutes to boot. I was saying it takes about an hour for the installer application to just get to the first step and then an hour to load each additional step. I think i will just wait until this weekend when i have time to waste.
For me it's going to be this summer if i can find a computer that my parents will let me install Ubuntu on.
P.S. I have a an old gateway but when I tried to load it I got an error. Tari said it had something to do with windows 2000/me. do you guys know how to fix or get around this issue?

I'm fairly certain you misunderstood what Tari said, as it is completely impossible for Windows to interfere with the Ubuntu LiveCD in any way, shape, or form.
I was quoting the isolinux site; it seemed to be a problem with his disc controller.

At least one Promise ATA-type controller with BIOS (model number unknown) does not work with ISOLINUX since it hard-codes the location of the El Torito boot catalogue from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM and will only boot from this location!!!!!! The reporter of this bug was able to get it to boot by hacking mkisofs to put the boot catalogue in the same location as the Windows 2000 one.
@TheStorm: What is the error? I can't magically give you a workaround for an error if I don't know what the error says Very Happy (write it down verbatim).
k I will get it as soon as possible I'm not near that computer and my parents won't let me install ubuntu on any other computer.
