Thanks to libti*, TilEm supports virtual linking between TilEm instances and between TilEm and real external hardware (calculators, lab equipment). I've just successfully transferred a variable between two emulated 84+SE through the virtual link, on Linux.
My go-to emulator for testing linking is PindurTI: you can link up to 4 virtual calculators together (which was great for testing networking protocols like CALCnet2), and it has very accurate emulation.
