Huh, I guess you're right about that. Sweet! I think that's exactly what I'll do. If there's no header and the file contains any zeros, it gets shunted into LEVELS.

Sorry to tell you this but you CAN have a null byte in BASIC.
Str1=$AA00.
Argh, there goes that idea then. Hold on, lemme check the SC2 token table:

00d is a box
92d, 00d is [A]
93d, 00d isL1
94d, 00d is Y1
96d, 00d is Pic1
97d, 00d is GDB1
00d, 00d is ZXScl
126d, 00d is Sequential
170d, 00d is Str1
187d, 00d is npv(
239d, 00d is setDate(

So I'd have to cpir to all those before a zero to make sure it was clean. That's not the end of the world.

what happens if one of those characters is at the end of the description string? Wink
Then Doors CS would incorrectly categorize it. Smile

You seem awfully cheery about that, I mean really, it's the end of the world if that happens!
I think you forgot your </sarcasm> tag somewhere in there. Anyway, that's why I think I'll be omitting that feature for now and leaving it for someone to make as an SE.
