Honest question: why is the vote counting process in the USA presidential election process not over yet, two weeks after the election day ? Or put differently, why were there still millions of uncounted votes 24h after the last polling places, in the latest timezone, closed ?
Both questions derived from the fact I keep seeing, in my Twitter timeline, that Hillary's lead on the popular vote keeps rising, now surpassing 2M votes - just not in the right places.
I know that the USA is the 4th largest country in the world in terms of area, and that it spans pretty much each and every timezone, due to US military bases scattered all over the world. However:
* vote counting is an embarrassingly parallel process, totally suitable for distributed execution;
* we're no longer in the 19th century or earlier, we enjoy modern communication technology;
* voters being scattered all over the world is not a sufficient reason for the vote counting process taking weeks: the French territories outside mainland + nearby Corsica island are scattered all over the world, too. That's why France has one of the largest areas of "exclusive economical zone" in the world
So what am I missing ? Postal vote, if counting of that is centralized in the USA instead of being distributed in countries ?
