To go with my work on the TI 8x Emulation improvements in MESS I started to look a bit closer at how linking worked with the calculators. Since MESS focuses on accuratly emulating the hardware at as low of level as possible I bought a few GrayLink cables with different date codes to see what I could find out.

It looks like they are mostly made up of a PIC 16C54, some discrete level shifting hardware and a crystal for a clock.

The next question is can we extract the firmware from the devices to properly emulate them or will I have to do high level emulation in mess rather than emulating the PIC micro controller and how it is implemented.

I'll either reply or update this topic with links to PIC 16C54 related things or let Tari and others fill in what we've found so far.
