Since 2017 I've been collecting all the Lego supercars:
After looking online, I found some wall mounts on Amazon that looked awesome and took up significantly less space! Unfortunately they're being sold for $125 each. There was no way I was going to spend $625 on something that was just going to sit on my wall, and they didn't even support powering the LED lighting some of my cars have. Surely I can do better, for cheaper right?
For each wall mount:
I got a 20x30" poster frame from Walmart for $20. I got some angle reinforcements, steel wire, screws, and washers for $1 (the Habitat Restore place has amazing prices). Hardboard for $3. 3D printed car mounts (by Pacoanimal) for ~$2. Female USB C & A plugs and wire for $6. Picture hanging hooks for $2 Finally the poster backgrounds for $21* which are somehow the most expensive part of this project. Totaling: $55 each.
* I have a friend who is printing them out for me for much cheaper. : )
The Walmart poster frame obviously wasn't designed to hold up a 6lbs Lego car so I added a proper hook at the top rated for 40lbs pictures. I don't trust the particleboard poster bezel to hold up over time so I used steel wire to attach the hanging hook to the bottom corner reinforcements to spread the weight. For more reinforcement, between the poster and the black cardboard backing I put a sheet of hardboard which provided a sturdy place to screw the 3D printed mounts into.
Lastly, I drilled a big hole in the center so I could run a usb port to the bottom of the Lego cars to power the lights. On the left and right side of the poster there's a usb C port which allows me to daisy chain all the posters together with a single power supply. I verified all the cars together only draw about 2.5w which is well within the usb spec.
After a few weeks of work, and getting some of the supplies free, I've spent a quarter of the retail price for all 5 wall mounts and I think they look pretty great! I'm still waiting on my friend to print out the final background posters but this is what it looks like so far!
