That's awesome!! What are you using for your sprite engine?
it uses 8*8, but for speediness patches of the same sprite are overlapped. instead of tilemapping, it just draws the whole thing at once.
for hit detection I while use a matrix, each member of which refers to an 8*8 section on the map. its actually much faster than tilemapping, but requires more time to program.
