I was recently given a calculator to fix, as the screen would not turn on. I took it home, and to my surprise, the batteries were missing! I quickly replaced them in hopes of the calculator turning on. It did, but the situation was not much better than not on at all. Here are some badly taken images to show what I mean:

Initial problem. Contrast turned up. Two small bars seemingly permanently turned off

Strange blue pixels? This isn't the light. It shows when the graph screen is shown

Badly taken picture, shows that the "off" bits still work

I'm taking this to Cemetech to see if they have any ideas further than I do.
This topic is somewhat relevant to the issue. It's a failure in the connection of the fine-pitched ribbon cable feeding the LCD, and is generally believed to be unrepairable; success in repairs has been highly variable on a case by case basis.
Ah, thank you.

On the bright side, the previous owner doesn't need the calculator anymore, so I can perhaps use its ROM image to emulate it.

I'm still wondering what the cause of the blue pixels is. Is it just an insane amount of pigment?
It's what happens when the pixels get a higher voltage than what produces black. I believe the blue color is a byproduct from the way a high contrast is achieved with a STN screen.
