So, I am not an Apple fan. Can some one convince me not to buy one of these ->

I have no other Apple products but feel that for £50 it's worth it just for the calender alone.
Um, that's not an Apple product. That's an Android tablet...
I'm not going to make this a Pro-Apple or anti-Android post but you really need to watch out for what you buy. These cheap Android tablet likely make use of cheaper flash storage resulting in a sluggish experience overtime. I've only seen this issue on the Nexus 7 as it's probably the tablet most people were complaining about. Read
this article on TabTimes to possibly understand why. While The Nexus 7 wasn't particularly a victim of cheap flash, it was a victim to a lack of TRIM in Android 4.2 (and I presume older) but the manufacturer has to cut significant costs somewhere to deliver a sub-100 dollar tablet. I don't know as to where exactly but I'd say it's on the flash memory.
The Android tablet you linked to is 4.0. It will likely suffer the same fate as the 4.2 Nexus 7. Find a tablet with 4.3 or go for a used/refurbished iPad 2.
I must say that the Nexus 7 (late 2013) with Android 4.4 Kit-Kat is an amazingly fast machine. I got one from my girlfriend's parents for Christmas after being very happy with the Nexus 5 with Kit-Kat, and while I doubt they'll be pushing it to the edges of its capabilities, even in random testing I found it fast and responsive. I agree with comic that you get what you pay for with cheap off-brand Android tablets, but I wouldn't recommend the closed ecosystem of Apple iPad devices either.

As a counter-argument, you can jailbreak your iDevice pretty easily (and rooting it after that is trivial - install OpenSSH and login with the default password - "alpine"), and install Cydia for an open-ecosystem and full-powered ARM Unix.

If he's using it mostly for a calendar. Any tablet will work. The iPad is overkill for this but it supports Google Calendar syncing.
My counter argument would be to not get a tablet. If you are looking at it just for a calendar get a larger screened phone like the Galaxy S4 or the Note II.

Wow - I didn't know about that. Unix on the iPad would be cool. I admire the physical product but could not live within the constraints of Apple. Can I have a command line interface too ?

Yes - that's a good point. I will consider this option.

Yes, Kerm I have read this - personally I have found the iPad slugginsh when running third party Apps which are not optimized properly.
