In September 2012, my first book, Programming the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus was published. This first book was (and is) an example-filled, hands-on tutorial that introduces students, teachers, and professional users to programming with the TI-83+ and TI-84+ graphing calculators. Once that project was completed and started hitting stores shelves, Manning Publications, my publisher, had another proposition for me. Since my writing and teaching style was well-received by readers, and many have decried the inadequacy of existing TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus books for beginners, they asked me to consider such a project.
I'm happy to announce that Using the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus will be published in September 2013 by Manning Publications. This new book will teach you calculator skills through the lens of fun exercises and problems. If you want to learn how to use your calculator while getting a more intuitive feel for your math/science class material, you can work through full chapters. In a hurry to finish homework and need to learn a calculator feature fast? Easy-to-find reference sidebars will give you skills in a nutshell. The first review cycle is underway, which means that members of the target audience are giving Manning feedback on the progress thus far. You can contact them if you want to become a reviewer. You can also become part of the MEAP (Manning Early Access Program) to receive new chapters as they're completed, plus get the printed book when it's complete.
I'll be announcing milestones along the way as I make progress on Using the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus, and as always, I more than welcome feedback and suggestions with you. With our growing body of student and teacher members, and the rising popularity of education tools like SourceCoder and the jsTIfied online calculator emulator, I look forward to working with and teaching calculator skills to the students and educators this new book is aimed at.
