Is that an IP for megaupload? It doesn't work Razz

Anyway, DJ, that is under current copyright law. MegaUpload had plenty of reasons to be shut down since it was an american-hosted site violating american copyrights, therefore it fell under US jurisdiction and was fined for copyright infringement.

I didn't use megaupload for piracy. What I downloaded from there was legit 99% of the time. D:

I only used Megaupload for obscure porn, but I'm pretty sure it was still all legal.
Megaupload was not violating American copyrights, it was following the necessary rules that should have qualified it for the DMCA safe-harbor provisions. The copyright violations were from its users who uploaded copyrighted material.

Sidebar, the Mega Song debacle in which Megaupload paid for the production of a music video featuring artists who use its services, and which UMG tried to have taken down repeatedly claiming they owned it.

Ditto on all counts. This is the kind of thing that makes people contemplate domestic terrorism. I hope to God it doesn't need to get that far.
Looks like there might have been more going on then simple IP-enforcement. http://techcrunch.com/2012/01/24/was-megaupload-targeted-because-of-its-upcoming-megabox-digital-jukebox-service/
From what I read they got in trouble because the majority of their employees regularly used the copyrighted material, so it was obvious they knew it was there.
There's one solution: Let them do it. Let them pass their censorship bills. Let them shut Youtube down. Let them arrest people by the hundreds of thousands. Let them put 12-year-girls in Hello Kitty and My Little Pony shirts in handcuffs. I freaking dare them to try. When all that happens, the people will rebel. The pendulum will swing just as far the other way, and those perpetrating this will lose everything just as fast as they gained it. Sometimes you have to turn right to go left. I say let them pass their bills. As the problem grows, so does the case for fighting it.
I really, really hope it doesn't have to go that far (at least, not while I'm here Wink), but you have a good point. Sadly, it sometimes takes major damage like this to actually get people to finally wake up and smell the coffee. I just hope that by then it won't be too late.

That's the beauty of this logic: there is no too late. As the oppression increases, so too does the collective will to fight it. Eventually the oppressors can no longer maintain their control and fall. This is why we've been seeing so many dictatorships and theocracies collapse all around the world.

Amen to that. All corrupt and evil powers eventually collapse. The Nazis are the prime example of this: A corrupt dictatorship that genocided the Jews sowed the seeds of its own destruction by creating universal hate from the outside world.
Additionally, the multiple witch hunts in history such as the Salem and McCarthy witch trials have all collapsed under their own weight as soon as the officials themselves were attacked. By the way SOPA is worded, people attacking each other for copyright infringement could turn into another witch hunt, and if this one follows the past ones, SOPA will collapse under its own weight.

It also takes a LONG time to get everyone to the point where they're willing to risk their lives for the cause of freedom. How many years have the Iranians been under their current regime? How many years was Qaddafi in command of Libya?

Also, some good news for any of you who were using Megaupload to store your personal data. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/01/megaupload-server-purge/

A fair point, but keep in mind people in that part of the world aren't used to having freedom the way we are. And If there's one thing Americans really excel at, it's knee-jerking in response to something.

I'd read about that. This is also relevant:

That actually gives me faith in humanity. If information really needs to be known, it can be made known, no matter how the powers that be try to crack down on it.
RIAA to Congress: f*** due process, we want our money.

This is a slightly older article, but I like how unbiased the attacks described are:

I'm glad someone is going after corporate democrats.
I think the takedown of MU just proves how the government already has enough power for this sort of thing.

Perhaps. They do still need to actually have a reason to do things like this though, so we aren't in Nazi-ville yet, no matter what paranoid people might tell you. Jon Stewart pointed out the other day that Hitler didn't start out small, with little encroachments on liberty here and there, like many keep claiming. He started by murdering hundreds of his opponents in the streets. As long as we don't see that happen, we should be ok.
this is actually a sad event for me because when i started hearing about this some of the sites that i normally share and download my files from was starting to remove a lot of files and where blocked or shut down. those were site where i could relay on good downloadables because most sites just end up giving my computer viruses or have crappy files. i hate it!
So....we don't seem to have raised enough outrage of CISPA yet. Possibly because Google/Facebook/Twitter are supporting it this time around?

I signed a petition thingy for it and shared it with others. I really don't have the resources to do anything else.
One thing this will do is promote support for alternative DNS roots, and I wouldn't mind that happening.

You would, if the wrong group started to get traction as the new DNS root.
