Oh cool. I actually re-created the original Anikan Skywalker Podracer set a while ago in TBM. I'll see if I can find some screenshots.
Meh, only back to 2002? I'll stick with Peeron =)
Lego has gone down the drain in recent years, IMHO. They used to have real quality sets, but it became too commercial. Now they're just trying to suck money out of kids. I think the biggest example of this is Bionicle. The first five or so years were great. Good storyline, good characters, all the stuff. Then about the sixth or seventh year, things started to get a bit commercial. There was a bit more commercialism in Toa Mahari than in the past but not too much. The storyline was still great. I loved the final comic when Toa Matoro saved the The Great Spirit. The real downfall was Phantoka. The comics' quality started to degrade. The characters became shallower, and there was more commercialism in the Magazine. The real killer was the Glatorian stuff. It became almost 100% commercial, and I think the only way they were able to make money off of it was the gullibility of kids. Their worst move was to end the line, without ending the comics properly, forcing people to go online to see how it ends. Of course, even Glatorian Arena looks good in comparison of hero factory.

There was an article in BrickJournal about how Lego is excited to be able to support both their themed children's merchandise and the adult hobbyist community with Lego Factory which I think led towards the high degree of piece specialization in recent sets ("useless pieces" from the perspective of many hobbyists). Unfortunately it looks like Lego Factory is shutting down, but Lego has taken care to ensure that they continue to produce bulk-brick and Creator oriented sets in addition to the kids stuff. I do miss the days of Exploriens and Roboforce though compared to today's glitz.

I too hated the decline of Bionicle. I grew up with it, but towards the end stopped caring about what happened. The characters were shallower, and they kept switching from one thing to another (locations, the flying stuff, underwater, etc., not quite sure what all there was 'cause that's when I stopped caring much) instead of really building.
-edit- Cut out a bunch of stuff I was gonna post 'cause it's been long enough since I cared that I don't remember enough specifics to complain about how it went downhill :/

There is no such thing as a useless Lego. None.
I think my biggest gripe with LEGO is that they discontinued the metal-rail 9V trains and went with battery-powered, plastic-rail trains. I don't understand why they wouldn't want to keep their trains similar to model railroads, and I would have loved to greatly expand my collection of metal-railed 9V trains once I have enough money to do it without too much impact on my bank account.
Of course, some of the increase in commercialism could have been me becoming more aware of it as I grew older.

Ugg. This. I think it had to have been the result of a fat check from Duracell.

Ugg. This. I think it had to have been the result of a fat check from Duracell. While I never had any of the lego train sets iirc they didn't change the mold for the tracks, only removed the metal rail from them, so you can make the old trains work on new tracks if you can find a way to complete the circuit. That said they most likely moved to batteries due to the components for the battery powered trains being cheaper, namely those metal rails on the tracks. Not the mention the transformer in the control box's to step it down to 9v.
