New laptop. Good sound. Until four days ago. Now, no sound.

I've have narrowed the problem down to either the driver, or the sound card (not the speakers). I'm very certain that it is not caused by something else.

I am running:

Linux 2.6.40.3-0.fc15.x86_64
Fedora 15
KDE 4.6.5
Years ago when I had a laptop, I had an issue a couple of times with the sound suddenly going dead (but everything sound-related otherwise working normally on the software side), which I was told was due to an internal audio cable coming loose. No idea if this applies to recent laptops, though.
Does this happen right away at boot or does it happen after a little while of running the computer?

Always.
Hmm sounds like a kernel bug to me, what sound card do you have? lspci should tell you.

Dunno, that's just when I tried to run a game and there was no sound. It might have happened earlier.
My guess is that it could be a kernel issue, have you tried plugging in headphones to see if the connector is just broken and thus always thinking headphones are inserted?

It doesn't work with headphones.

An excellent question indeed. Can we rule out any sort of hardware failure? Do the speakers definitely work with other devices?

Internal speakers, and yes,I tried two sets of headphones.
Have you tried turning off mute and turning up the volume?
How are you running the game out of curiosity? If you are running it in a separate X Server, you'll have to use `ck-launch-session' or similar to get sound working (which is what I do).

Yes, of course I have; if it suddenly started working I'd be blasted out of my mind.

@Souvik it doesn't work with other methods of playing sound either. As I said before, I am *very* sure that this is caused by either the driver, or sound card.

EDIT:

I just discovered that it only works in root, and that the computer thought bthat it had been removed... Weird. I'm also getting a ton of kernal errors.

EDIT:

Umm, this is weird too: there is a audio card detected in my normal user settings that is not detected in root. The one that works in root is now greyed out. Umm, working one is the analog one (greyed out in normal user), and the non-working one is the digital one(not showed in root)

EDIT:

Since my flash is not working, and people say that this could be giving me troubles, I'll post on that here too. I downloaded the .rpm from adobe's website, and installed it. It didn't show up on the plugins part of firefox, and it was messed up on the sys setting page. I reinstalled it, and it did no good. I tried to uninstall it, but it was still there.

Is there an image that's suppose to go along with this? I'm under the impression there is.

Yes, umm, look here. Note: these are my normal user screenies. I don't have root ones yet.

EDIT:

Now I do.
I fixed flash. I also switched to xfce, because kde was running slow.
*bump*

Yes, my sound is still broken... Unfortunately, it hasn't fixed itself in 3 weeks... Does anyone know where to get drivers? I have a toshiba laptop, as indicated by these specs.

Oh, xfce was messing up X, so I'm using lxde, which works fine. And flash is installed, and working fine.
But still no sound? Sad
in the first 4 days, did you update the kernel or anything else? If an update to pulseaudio or alsa caused it, you may want to file a bug report. If the kernel was updated, then have grub boot into the original kernel. If nothing happened, copy the alsa config file (.a... something, don't remember the name) from root to your home directory, and possibly the pulseaudio one, too.
