The title says it all. Are there any options for applying a full-volume encryption to a Linux system? I figure there might be some software for the more popular distributions. So far, I've only noticed that some file systems allow you to natively encrypt certain folders, as opposed to the entire drive itself.

Yes - I've already done my own research. I just can't find anything. I need something similar to TrueCrypt. TrueCrypt only allows full-volume encryption on Windows systems.

It wouldn't matter if it were a distribution-specific method. I can live with changing distributions.
TrueCrypt? http://linuxandfriends.com/2010/02/03/how-to-truecrypt-setup-on-ubuntu-linux/
I use LUKS here (system-wide)... I also use it on a USB drive to encrypt an ext4 partition
I'm also using LUKS for an external drive here. It functions as a layer just below the filesystem layer, so you can use whatever filesystem you want with it.
It looks like I need dm-crypt in order to use LUKS...? I'm not sure how I go about implementing this. Is there any specific software I need? I was trying to look through something on the site's help documentation, but it was just a dead link. Mad
Well, if you wanted to use it with, for example, Ubuntu, here's a nifty little tutorial on LUKS + Ubuntu:

Thank you, everyone. I believe this resolves my question. Smile

Excellent, glad to help. Smile I hope you'll let us know if and when you attempt this, if it is successful.
