As Kerm listed above should be using red and
black wire. The white wire is D-, not ground.
(You may be using the white wire for aesthetic reasons in your model, but it's a little confusing given the standard white wire in USB cables).

Awesome. I'm thinking of using some spare cylinder legos for the plastic "batteries," which will let me thread the wire right through to the contacts.
