This. The 3D was used much the same way as color film in the Wizard of Oz, to make the fantasy world seem more "real" than the real world.
And in that way I'd say it was used more effectively than the 3d in Avatar, et. al, even if it wasn't as breath-taking. It contributed to the realism of the visuals in a tangible way without distracting you from what was actually going on.
