Mount a vehicle to a path? Like every time a rail brick is placed and connected to another it'd create a new node on the path. Then the vehicle can only go backwards and forwards based on which way the path goes, or is this not possible?

That is exactly what we've been talking about doing in every discussion of trains for freebuild.

That's exactly what we've been talking about. The hard parts are:

1) Converting objects like train cars from free-physics mode (ie, falling about the landscape) to fixed-to-track mode
2) The reverse: barreling full-speed off the end of a track and becoming normal unconstrained objects again
3) Choices: Things like switching tracks and X-double-crossovers
