MIT has really good dumpsters, with loads of electronic goodies.
Here's what I've gotten my hands on so far:

1 Sun Blade 1000, 73 GB HDD, 2x UltraSparc 750 Mhz, 2 GB RAM
1 Dell Latitude D610, Pentium M 1.6 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, no HDD, works otherwise
1 Toshiba P4 laptop of unknown specs, no PSU
1 Core 2 Duo Dell machine, no HDD, no RAM
20+ Pentium 4 machines, assorted. No longer with me, since I have no space
1 Big Peltier Cooler
1 4th gen iPod (B/W)
1 Fancy breadboard with built-in function generators, POTs, etc.
1 5 amp NiCd battery charger
1 USB keyboard
4 USB optical mice

There was also an ultracentrifuge of unknown condition there today, but seeing as it weighs few hundred pounds, I doubt I'll be able to carry it to the 4th floor Sad
So...much...stuff....It's only been 4 weeks of school! It helps that all of MIT's e-waste is consolidated into one convenient indoor location.
Dude. Build a cluster with those P4's Very Happy
Save up again!

That's exactly what I said, especially since he doesn't pay for his utilities, but he doesn't have the room for them. Sad What's sad is that almost every EE server at Cooper Union has equal or worse specs than those machines, including a Sun Blade with half those specs.
Hmm. Looks like there's a trip to MIT in my near future!

Let me know when you're going; I'll have to take a field trip to Boston on the Chinatown bus. Wink
More fun:
1 Coffee Machine
1 Nokia E71x with no battery or charger
1 iMac Core Duo 20" with no hard drive, now repaired and working
1 Radeon HD 2400 PRO PCI-E graphics card
1 20 mW Argon-Ion laser, pulled from a dead DNA sequencer

I'm particularly interested in how you could combine the laser, the phone, and the coffee maker. I smell epic (caffeinated) hijinks...
I could use the waste heat from the laser to brew coffee Smile
These things are terribly inefficient; the 20 mW laser draws ~2500 W.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. What (non-evil) plans do you have for the coffee maker? Simple caffeine dispenser, or some kind of hardware hacking such as automation?
I think the coffee maker will stay simple. It's nice to have a stable caffeine dispenser that won't randomly die Very Happy

you make an excellent point. What about the rest of the hardware, including the computer that you got running? Any immediate use, or just for the coolness factor atm?
