Infrared Led Link Cables

Ive come up with an idea, make a infrared link cable, think about it, using a chat program you could easily cheat with a friend in a class if u both had infrared transmitters/recievers attached to your calcs, well i like the idea and would like some help designing one, so uhm, im sorta good at circuits and would like help making a schematic for one

Not a bad idea! There are a few IR link designs floating around out there. I'm told the biggest design difficultly is bit timing. A bonus of having an IR system on your calc is being able to capture signals from TV remotes, remote keyboards and other devices.

yes, and they cost $50 up because you have to buy a PIC micro controller to make sense of what the calc sends, as it doesnt send over one line and recieve over teh other (that would be too easy)

Most AVR micro controllers retail for under $7.50. The downside is that --like most embedded micro devices--they require an expensive development boards for reprogramming. It is however possible to build a low-cost board using Radio Shack components.

Who cares? At least, it's easier to chat with your friends then with a very long link cable.

Question: What's the range of an infrared link?

Does anyone have a rough idea of building this?

Most of the present IR link plans claim to go as far as 30 feet, which isn't an unreasonable claim. It's basically got the same limits as a typical TV remote (works best in the dark, can bounce off white/shiny objects). It all depends on the sending/receiving LEDs--among other things.

actually, if you can get teh parts small enough, you might be able to embed it into the calc....drill a little hole on the side for the LEDs

I might try to work out a prototype within a week or two, but I can't guarntee any reliability (my apartment/lab is all components and no test equipment :wacko: ). It's really best to use an existing design. That way, if you meet a stranger with one they'd have sporting a chance of being compatible.

Hey I have an idea. You know that cradle the Ti-Keyboard has? Why not embed the IR into it and fake it out the IR is part of the calc?

The link is great. Hope some of you guys could build it. It'd be fun to use it link with others during class and play some link game that does support it.
