There's already an Nspire community at hackspire.unsads.com.

An OS replacement is way out of line right now...the goal is just to execute any ARM assembly at all, and come up with a viable hack and system of releasing programs that will continue to work even after they fix whatever exploit we release.

They are dead-set against us doing this, so anything we exploit, they will fix. Take a look at the PSP, there have been many exploits of varying natures, but once you can get unsigned code running on it, you can start running standard applications people have made.

We know next to nothing about Nspire hardware, and that's what has to change first.

The Nspire OS is encrypted and transferred to the calculator encrypted, where it is decrypted, validated, and then written (in that order). You will not be able to install an OS of your own without an exploit, just like with the other calculators.

So...it IS being worked on. Because of how much TI wants to shut this down, details are going to be hard to find publicly, especially on running code.

If you're using an OS flaw, couldn't TI fix this? Or is it for sure irrepairable?

What is the breadboard next to it? Good job, though!

It hosts RS232 and JTAG adapters. Unfortunately we have not been able to find the JTAG pins on the external connector, where they were supposed to be.

Good luck finding them! Keep us posted, please.
EDIT: Can you send me a pic of the full board, please?
EDIT2: You should send this to hackaday. Wink

Thanks to Mic (TI-Bank), I've discovered that there are 2 new OSes for the nSpire...

The CD coming with the new "TI-nSpire Navigator" kit, includes new nSpire OSes for WiFi connectivity.
OS 1.7.1 build 50, and OS 1.7.2.

It could be usefull to get those new OSes...

Edit: Also, ExtendeD, would you be willing to upload an unedited/uncropped version of the image? The version you posted fails a JPEGsnoop test. I don't distrust you, I just want to be sure that the hack is more than a photomanipulation. Thanks!

Sure: http://bytecode.fr/miscfiles/ti/nspire/plop_orig.jpg
But JPEGsnoop tells me:

Code:
Based on the analysis of compression characteristics and EXIF metadata:

ASSESSMENT: Class 4 - Uncertain if processed or original
While the EXIF fields indicate original, no compression signatures
in the current database were found matching this make/model

Appears to be new signature for known camera.
If the camera/software doesn't appear in list above,
PLEASE ADD TO DATABASE with [Tools->Add Camera to DB]

I think the fix for a Class 4 is for you to take a bunch of pictures with the same camera and submit them to the database. Then that camera's photos should be recognized in the next release of JPEGsnoop (or database update, I am not sure how it works).

They're just the OS upgrade files that were available on TI's web site or CDs, or that were sent by TI-Cares (when they used to send OSes... they don't do it any more)
They aren't any ROM dumps or boot1 code images.

So I don't think our files are illegal...

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

But when TI finds out, legal or illegal is not the important thing for them!
Just look at how they used DMCA...

In the US, it's illegal for anyone to distribute copyrighted files without permission, even if they are freely available. I don't think we can get in trouble for downloading them, however (as long as they are free and we are not stealing something of value). It is the distributor who is in trouble. And because the distributor is French, and I don't know French law, this whole business could be legal!

They would need to send us DMCA notices like last time to get us to take them down, right? They couldn't just come at us guns blazing?(that is, if there was a US host)

I think they would have to either ask the form politely to take it down or investigate French law to see if they could sue them in a French court or use some French equivalent to the DMCA. The DMCA is meaningless outside of the US.

My question was about people hosting it in the US.

If I got the right information, last time they used the DADVSI (french "equivalent" of the DMCA) to make Yaronet remove the whole z80/68k BOINC key factoring topic.
But on TI-Bank, we haven't posted yet about "how to crack" the nSpire: it's not the same thing...

Cracking would fall under the reverse-engineering clause of the DMCA(as I believe all of this would), I believe the issue with the nspire is hosting the crackable OS(1.1.xxxx)

Not true. It blocks downgrades.

Calc84maniac is correct. The calculator rejects older OS versions. However, I do believe it possible:

[quote name='http://lafacroft.xtreemhost.com' date='Dec 30 2009, 02:26 PM']You CAN downgrade your TI-Nspire OS by deleting the OS through the Maintanence menu (pull out the batteries, put them back in, and hold Enter, On, Home, and P) and loading an older version.[/quote]

So after deleting the OS I would just connect it to a computer like I'm doing an upgrade and then send version 1.1?

I don't have any problem downgrading, without using the maintenance menu. Which OS versions and TI-Nspire model are you using?

Strange... Sincerely, I've never had problems downgrading my nSpire without the maintenance menu either...

What message are you getting? on the computer, or calculator?

It may depend on the computer link software / calculator OS / calculator Boot2 versions...

Okay, I was wrong. I am able to downgrade. I was just taking hackspire's word for it, and never tried without deleting the OS first.
