hm, I should look into doing that too, especially considering that the previous project I mentioned in my post involved splicing a phone charger cable to a USB cable so I could charge my phone using any USB port. The other half of that project was turning a 5V car charger into a USB charger, so I could charge nearly any USB device in my car (GPS, iPod, Sansa, and now my phone!). All of that cost me only a few bucks and a couple hours of my free time.

Ok, I had today off of work, so I made a USB to "wood battery" adapter. It's basically the same as the one I made using a 5VDC wall adapter. Here's a picture of the results:
I wasn't very careful hammering the nail in, as you can see it poking through the left-hand dowel. :)
Now, the TI-86 doesn't have a mini USB port like the TI-84+ and TI-89Ti, but I wonder how difficult it would be to add one just for power (it would be pretty difficult to make it capable of transmitting data, though, as it would require software support on the calculator too). Also, on those calculators that do have USB ports, it shouldn't be too difficult to make it power the calculator without batteries, and maybe even add an electronic switch to disable power from the batteries when external power is available.
EDIT: does anyone know where I could get some inexpensive female mini B USB ports, preferably without taking devices apart just to take their USB ports?
