I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Dell Optiplex 745 today. I could not connect to the internet with the LiveCD, but I installed it anyway. It still doesn't work. This is the first time linux has been installed on this computer. Windows XP connects with no problem.

I have a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller.

I have tried removing Network Manager and using dhclient but it doesn't work either.

Sounds like you should look at broadcom for drivers Razz

Also, if something doesn't work on the liveCD, chances are the livecd will not work if it boots from the HDD.

Hmm... only problem is that that thread seems to be about something else. (two NIC's conflicting).

My lspci output:

This might help, but it looks like you'll have to install a RPM package (which you can do through alien).

Given the hint from souvik's link, it looks like it's just a matter of needing a newer kernel to have the tg3 paths for your network adapter. The latest Ubuntu release (12.04) is likely to have it, or you might be able to just download a kernel update on another machine (which I have no experience doing on ubuntu).

Yeah, I am downloading 12.04 right now. I'll tell you if it fixes it.

EDIT:

I booted the Ubuntu 12.04 LiveCD and it still cannot connect to the internet. I did "modprobe tg3" and it didn't seem to do anything. What should I do?

EDIT:

I found this: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/broadcom-57xx-card-dell-d620-no-solution-508649/

However, lspci DOES see the ethernet controller in my case...

EDIT:

this says i need the BCM driver... might as well try it.
ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/CDR-APLUS_1.12_for_A+_platform/Broadcom/Build8.2.6/Manuals/English/linux.htm

I will post if it works.

That seems to be a pretty old source of information, and therefore, the driver posted on that page has reduced chances of working.
