cracked clients or name spoofers are usefull not only for piracy, but for legit players so they can play with their nicks on the servers they play on if minecraft.net goes down as well as the auth server..

I use it when I cant get my client to connect.

I'm sure that's true, but I'd imagine that it's mostly used for the nefarious purposes.
