When you look down, your shadow and whatever you're holding dissappears. Same thing happens to brick shadows when the brick isn't on your screen.

I think that has more to do with you not seeing the brick so it stops rendering the shadow as well.

I would guess that is it exactly. Poor visibility tests for the lose.

Elf and I have discussed this, we do believe it's fixable, IFIRC. I forget what we figured had to be done though.

There's a reason the graphics system is being overhauled, and a reason that it's a pain in the arse to do so.
