DShiznit: I guess we'll just have to wait and see, huh?

SpaceX hopefully going to the ISS tomorrow.

And another viewpoint set of viewpoints: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/05/spacex-qa-roundup/all/1
Quote:

If nothing else, this launch showcases NASA’s attempt to try things a little differently. Historically, the agency has awarded aerospace companies contracts that pay for the cost of their rockets and any overruns or problems they encounter. But with SpaceX, NASA is trying to only pay for the services it needs, with the company absorbing any failures. Looking into the future, we asked our experts:

If we absolutely have to have public/private cooperative ventures to accomplish spaceflight/anything else (which I don't accept, in the case of spaceflight or most other things), this has to be the model for government expenditures.

Seems that capsule by SpaceX was launched this morning at 3AM EST. There are several interesting factoids about the shuttle and its components, mostly names. Apparently it has a $1.6 billion price tag to fly through 2015 and do 12 missions. I hope they are all successful.

Impressive! Yes, I watched the launch; I was happy they were able to successfully hit their second launch window.

This is not really spacial at all, but it is related to aeronautics, and its funny.

That's really cool, until you consider that you're looking at the collision of two galaxies, and thus the mass graveyard of potentially trillions of sentient species.

Colliding galaxies wouldn't really cause the destruction of large masses (stars, planets, etc.), it would probably cause them to be displaced and affect gas and dust particles. Therefore any life present on those galaxies would most likely not be affected.

Right, but this particular one has a super-massive black hole that formed as a result, and is slowly crushing everything in the galaxy into nothingness. Anything that lived in either of those galaxies is either dead or will end up dead as a result.

A Dutch company is wanting to put people on Mars by 2023. The first 4 people that want to undertake this adventure will have to put up $6billion to make it a reality. They are hoping this will be the start of a colony on Mars.

I still don't like relying on private corporations to get humans to the moon and beyond. We have a perfectly good organization that did that 50 years ago. All they need is funding and a goal. It also just doesn't feel the same when a private entity does this. When NASA landed a man on the moon, every single American felt like they were a part of it, because every single American had contributed to it through taxes or labor. I just don't feel like that when a private entity achieves a goal. I have no stake in these companies, I don't feel like I have any part in their accomplishments; I just feel beaten and broken. When they meet a goal I'm not filled with happiness or pride, I feel as empty as the vastness of space.

Private entity doesn't have to mean for-profit corporation. I think it would be magnificent if Americans voluntarily decided to fund things like space ventures. But they don't, tax money is extracted under the threat of imprisonment, and the fact that you and I both know that the majority of Americans wouldn't fund such a venture of their own volition suggests that maybe we shouldn't be doing it with public funding either.

I've tried to get excited about private spaceflight but I can't. It always feels like someone else's accomplishment, not the nation's.

But I disagree with you on whether or not Americans would fund this venture. I think a majority would, but because of our economic system a majority of the people do not hold the majority of the wealth, and thus cannot finance it. Taxes are the means by which the majority that does not have wealth, keeps in check the minority that does. If everyone would pony up their fair share, and if we could get our budget in check(including trimming the fat from the military and some of the pension programs that have gotten out of hand at the state level), we could fund NASA and these missions. If we did that, everyone would own these accomplishments. The American people would once again feel pride in their nation. People would once again be excited about space travel and the future of mankind.
