http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2011/09/29/new-study-13-of-sun-like-stars-might-have-terrestrial-planets-in-their-habitable-zones/

Preliminary data analysis of the Kepler data suggests that up to 1/3 of sun-like stars might have terrestrial planets in their habitable zone.

In other news, Mercury once was volcanic (and has some weird blue landforms: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/09/110929-mercury-nasa-messenger-new-hollows-sulfur-space-science/)

and China is planning to launch a space station.

Great. So not only are the "evil communist" countries building taller buildings than us, they're also exploring space at a much faster rate.

At this stage in the game China is much closer to fascism than communism. They have an authoritarian government and private-ownership based market economy.

The Russians are setting goals to try to build a lunar colony utilizing the lava tubes that are on the moon as a means of protection from space debris, and as a way to eliminate costs of digging and a good chunk of construction.

And no, I don't want to hear whining about the US not doing it, or any other political post.

Regardless of who gets up there, it needs to be done.

A planetoid/rock on the outer edges of our solar system, part of the Kuiper Belt, is covered in water ice. Just something that seemed interesting and caught my attention Smile

A huge asteroid that's supposed to pass between us and the moon. Supposed to happen Nov 8th, and astronomers around the world are going to be glued to getting whatever information they can while it goes past.

Now they're going to look for the artificial light coming from cities. Just one problem: what about the aliens from "A Wrinkle In Time" that don't have sight and thus don't need light?

I saw mention of that as well. Also, I didn't think our technology had evolved enough to be able to get that kind of detail from a planet that is so far away..?

Well apparently we can distinguish between natural and artificial light, but I don't see how we could tell that about light that comes from a source we haven't discovered yet. And then there's the possibility that any advanced civilization would want to cloak their presence from less evolved beings like us, and would thus limit their artificial light pollution for just this reason.

Apparently The Register, a UK based tech news outlet, launched a paper airplane from space! See link below for video details.

NASA has shipped off a rover to go visit Mars to test for possible microbacterial life on the red planet. They say it will take a little over 8 months to get there, and will hopefully give us a greater understanding of the red planet.

NASA found an alien planet in the habitable zone of its star. It's called Kepler-22b, and it's 2.4 times the size of Earth, though it does have similar temperatures.

The article says it could be a sign of alien life, but I doubt it.

"Head NRL group scientist Russ Howard and lead ground systems engineer Nathan Rich say the mysterious object is in fact Mercury itself. And what we're seeing in the footage is the equivalent of Mercury's wake, "where the planet was on the previous day," as it travels through the solar system on its natural gravitational path"

As much as I would love for there to be alien spaceships [full of blue women] hiding in our solar system waiting to make first contact with man, this isn't evidence of that. It's a photographic artifact occurring from the method used to process the image data. Think about it, anything we can see, a more advanced race could see better. That means they can cover their tracks far better than we can search for them.

I saw that as well; now we have places to go, so we just need to stop wasting money taking baby steps into space exploration and start creating arc ships.
