But with a single RSS template, I wouldn't need headers/footers, would I? I can't think what I would need to have in specific headers/footers, because what would I be sharing those between?

That's where the XML RSS spec is; that's required. Yeah, that's funny about designerz-core; I'll have to fix that.

Edit: Fixed. And hmm, now it looks like I might be able to reuse the existing rss_body.tpl for this...
